In-Depth Holy Roman Empire Analysis

The Holy Roman Empire is one of the most complex and rewarding civilizations in Age of Empires IV. Their Prelate system creates an entirely different approach to the early game — instead of simply assigning villagers to resources, HRE players must actively manage their Prelate to inspire villagers for a 40% productivity bonus. This micro-intensive economy is paired with a strong infantry focus, relic mechanics that provide compounding economic bonuses, and unique defensive capabilities through the Aachen Chapel and Meinwerk Palace landmarks.

Prelate Inspiration — The Economic Multiplier

The Prelate is available from Dark Age and costs 100 gold — one of the earliest unique unit investments in any AoE4 civilization. An inspired villager works 40% faster for a duration before the inspiration expires and must be re-applied. With a single Prelate managing a group of 8 villagers, each inspiration cycle results in the equivalent of 3.2 extra villagers' work output. With two Prelates managing separate groups, the economic advantage becomes substantial in Castle Age when the gold cost of multiple Prelates is affordable.

Managing Prelates requires constant attention — they need to be near villagers to inspire them, cannot inspire while moving, and if they are killed (for example, by a Horseman raid targeting your villagers), the economic bonus disappears until a replacement is trained. HRE players develop the habit of protecting Prelates as carefully as they protect villagers, because the loss of a Prelate mid-boom is a significant setback.

Relic Mechanics and Economic Compounding

Relics garrisoned in HRE Regnitz Cathedral (a Castle Age landmark option) generate bonus gold based on the number of relics held. With three relics in the Cathedral, the gold generation is powerful enough to fund significant portions of military production without additional gold mining. The combination of Prelate-boosted economy, relic gold income, and strong landmark options means HRE players who control the map in Castle Age have a substantial economic advantage going into Imperial Age.

The Landscape technology (available to HRE) increases villager HP, making them more resistant to raiding and reducing the impact of Horseman harassment. This further supports the HRE's ability to boom economically under pressure.

Landsknecht — Area Damage Infantry

The Landsknecht is an unusual infantry unit that deals area-of-effect melee damage — each attack hits all enemy units immediately adjacent to the Landsknecht's target. Against clustered infantry, this area damage is devastating: a group of 10 Landsknechts fighting a wall of Spearmen will cleave through entire formations simultaneously. At 60 food and 100 gold, Landsknechts are expensive, but their area damage potential in the right engagement dramatically exceeds their individual cost. They are particularly effective against civilizations that rely on massed cheap infantry compositions, and represent one of the strongest unique units in AoE4 when used correctly in enclosed spaces or chokepoints.

Build Order Recommendations

The recommended opening for HRE is to train a Prelate immediately in Dark Age and use it to inspire your gathering villagers, prioritizing food for a fast Feudal advance. The Feudal Age landmark choice — Meinwerk Palace (reducing tech costs) or Aachen Chapel (providing Relics) — depends on your planned strategy. Meinwerk suits economic boom strategies; Aachen enables early relic collection for the Regnitz Cathedral payoff. Castle Age is where HRE truly comes online: the Burgrave Palace landmark produces free MAA and Spearmen periodically, creating continuous military pressure while your economy develops.
