If you have spent any time with the Greek, Egyptian, Persian, Norse, Babylonian, or Celtic civilizations, you already know that raw unit stats only tell half the story. The other half is your advisor loadout. Advisors are collectible cards that grant passive bonuses and active abilities, and the combination you equip before a match decides whether your empire snowballs early, holds a defensive line, or grinds out a long production war. With more than 350 advisors spread across every civilization, the challenge is not finding good cards. It is choosing which handful belong together.

How rarity tiers work

Every advisor falls into one of five rarity tiers, and rarity influences both the strength of the bonus and how many empire points the card costs to equip. Higher rarity is not automatically stronger in every match. A common gatherer bonus that fits your opening can outperform a legendary military card you never get to use.

Common

Reliable, low-cost bonuses to gathering, population, or basic unit stats. The backbone of most economic openings.

Uncommon

Sharper single-purpose effects, such as faster villager training or a small discount on a key building line.

Rare

Bonuses that reshape a strategy, like cheaper siege or a meaningful boost to a favored unit type.

Epic

Powerful multi-stat cards and active abilities that can swing a fight if timed well.

Legendary

Signature advisors with high impact and a high point cost. Strong, but rarely worth crowding your whole loadout around.

Spend empire points on purpose

Your loadout has a fixed empire point budget, so every card you equip is a trade. A single legendary card can eat the room that two well-chosen rares would fill. Before you lock a card in, ask what it does in the first five minutes and what it does after twenty. Cards that only matter late are a liability if the match is decided early, and pure opening cards leave you flat once your opponent stabilizes.

Weight your points toward the phase where your civilization is strongest, then patch the weakest phase with cheaper support cards. That avoids over-investing in a single win condition your opponent can dodge.

The three-role framework

The cleanest way to think about a loadout is to cover three roles rather than stacking the same bonus over and over. A balanced set usually touches all three:

  • Economy: gathering rates, villager cost, caravan and trade income, and population headroom. These bonuses compound, so they pay off most when equipped early.
  • Military: training speed, unit stats, or discounts on the units your strategy actually leans on. Focus these on one or two unit lines instead of spreading thin.
  • Defense and utility: tougher buildings, cheaper walls and towers, faster repairs, or an active ability that buys time when a raid hits.

Stacking three economy cards can feel great on paper, but a loadout with no military or defensive answer collapses the first time a rush lands. Coverage beats specialization for most players.

Match your loadout to the plan

Before a game, decide what you are trying to do, then let the advisors serve that plan. An aggressive Persian push wants training speed and a discount on its striking unit. A defensive Egyptian setup wants building durability and repair support so its priests and towers can outlast pressure. A booming Greek economy wants gathering and population cards early, with one flexible military option so a timing attack does not end the game before your economy pays off.

A quick pre-match checklist

  • Does my loadout help in the first five minutes?
  • Do I have an answer to early aggression?
  • Am I spending points on effects I will actually trigger?
  • Do my cards support one clear plan instead of three half-plans?

Answer yes to all four and you have a loadout that works with your civilization instead of fighting it. Explore the full advisor database to compare bonuses, point costs, and rarity across every civilization before you build your next set.
